Explore the programs through which we recognize excellence, educate young people, elevate talent, build capacity, and transform communities.
Recognition & Leadership
Summerville Institute for Excellence & Service
Honoring individuals whose leadership, professional achievement, and humanitarian service have created meaningful and lasting impact.
The Institute provides a structured process for identifying, evaluating, and recognizing accomplished adults whose work demonstrates integrity, sustained service, and measurable community impact.
Signature distinctions include the Honorary Doctorate in Humanitarianism, the Tall One Champion Award, and Excellence & Service Recognition. Candidates are considered through documented accomplishments, leadership, character, and service.
Education & Youth Development
Summerville Academy
A safe, structured learning environment where a school suspension can become a turning point instead of an educational setback.
Serving students in grades 6–12, the Academy helps young people continue their academic work while addressing behavioral, emotional, and social challenges that may have contributed to disciplinary action.
Students receive academic instruction, tutoring, mentoring, character education, conflict resolution, life-skills training, goal setting, college and career exploration, and family support.
Performing Arts
Wilson Idol
A premier community talent showcase discovering, developing, and celebrating extraordinary artistic talent throughout Wilson County and Eastern North Carolina.
Founded in 2013, Wilson Idol welcomes vocalists, instrumentalists, dancers, spoken-word artists, actors, and inspirational performers. Contestants gain professional stage experience, feedback, exposure, and opportunities to perform alongside nationally recognized artists.
The Wilson Idol Hall of Fame preserves this rich history by honoring champions, finalists, alumni, guest artists, volunteers, sponsors, and community leaders whose contributions shaped the legacy.

Theatre & Community Education
Spare the Rod, Spoil the Child
A nationally recognized, multi-award-winning gospel stage production using storytelling and the performing arts to educate, inspire, and transform.
Written and produced by Dr. Mildred Summerville, the production engages audiences through compelling stories about the realities confronting families and young people.
The experience creates space for reflection, conversation, healing, and better choices while supporting broader community outreach initiatives.
